A Quilt for Ethiopia

It has been way too long since I have blogged. February has been a crazy month for me!! First, I had three weeks of formal sorority recruitment and then I had comprehensive exams for my graduate program. Thankfully, I have still found time to quilt in this hectic schedule. Yesterday I finished a quilt that I donated to a great cause!

Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and Alpha Chi Omega sorority at Maryland hosted a large philanthropy event this evening: Terps for Ethiopia. The event was a great success and was a lot of fun to attend. There was delicious Ethiopian food, dancers, and a silent auction. My quilt raised $200!!

Here are some pics of the finished quilt.

I absolutely LOVE the pieced back. The fabric is Stitch in Color by Malka Dubrawsky for Moda. I used a layer cake and Kona White to create the chevron pattern. I quilted this on the long arm machine at And Sew It Goes, a quilt shop in Savage, Maryland. The binding is a batik from Joann. I chose fabric from Malka Dubrawsky's line because it reminds me of the rich bright colors I saw in fabric when I spent time in Malawi, Africa. Since this quilt was for a fundraiser that would benefit Ethiopia I figured this line would be appropriate. In memory of my trip to Malawi, I wore the bracelets I purchased there to the event this evening. All of the dancing and photographs tonight really made me miss Malawi!! The following photographs were taken at the benefit..

It was very hard for me to give up this quilt because I fell in love with it during the process. I really hope to make myself a similar quilt in the future! :)

  4. Great use of this fabric line and that's great that it raised a bunch of money for a good cause! I always worry that handmade donations to charity auctions won't raise enough money to be worth it, so it's great to hear that your efforts were valued!
