This year, I decided to make quilts for my family for Christmas. Today I will be sharing two of those quilts that I made for my brothers. I wanted them to both be large quilts that would fit well on a couch. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first was for my brother, Jonathan. This quilt used a variety of navy prints that I cut into 42 strips (2.5" x WOF). I used Kona White for the neutral strips. I followed the directions in <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5WgTyqB8Pc">this YouTube video </a>to assemble the quilt top. I quilted this one with my usual wavy lines. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvOES6V97rQRkUfuOplikgKxMWbSaPx7srGOD0n_ZH1WDY-qJkuq8u8ZAuyt54TPD3pxPjlc5lUd2wpHf6ARWy2n7Bm0MgE2_gwdsP6RTRZveXM4zcktlBoZWVteIotuqrhubyxZflaN4/s1600/IMG_3253.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvOES6V97rQRkUfuOplikgKxMWbSaPx7srGOD0n_ZH1WDY-qJkuq8u8ZAuyt54TPD3pxPjlc5lUd2wpHf6ARWy2n7Bm0MgE2_gwdsP6RTRZveXM4zcktlBoZWVteIotuqrhubyxZflaN4/s1600/IMG_3253.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The second quilt I made was for Isaac. This quilt was made using my Arrow Quilt pattern from Quilty magazine. I used Michael Miller Cotton Couture solids for the quilt top. Again, this one was quilted in wavy lines. The three middle arrows look to be the same color in this photo - but they really aren't. I guess I should have taken pictures in better daylight!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLKd-S7peogLazNJaxp2Xg0EkjpAPo4wFk6QFzXYzyan4KjwEBpP34AVz8y9FZgsolPTlVlUibKEyD73IW6SWqJ9DPmi8nNKsTbnf5z5kJfrwKMSkOv7pAU5mQXYtL07cdhFSB7RZM6wE/s1600/IMG_3257.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLKd-S7peogLazNJaxp2Xg0EkjpAPo4wFk6QFzXYzyan4KjwEBpP34AVz8y9FZgsolPTlVlUibKEyD73IW6SWqJ9DPmi8nNKsTbnf5z5kJfrwKMSkOv7pAU5mQXYtL07cdhFSB7RZM6wE/s1600/IMG_3257.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I really loved making both of these quilts and am happy that both of my brothers have a large quilt to use in their apartments :)Anna Hallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04548035122377908631noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7244782014673966013.post-23760828638976450352014-01-30T08:20:00.005-05:002014-01-30T08:20:38.805-05:00Quilty Magazine<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been excited to tell you about this for a very long time. This past June I came up with a quilt design that I thought was modern and good for a beginner, which fit the criteria for quilts accepted to Quilty. I decided to take the plunge and submit my idea as a submission to the magazine. And guess what? They accepted it!! My original design looked like this - super simple! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAoFU36c3C87dubEQsEJ4L4fDVCZgk6NcVqwXy-FdPDPnrEvs5kWMCXFTZ5T1M8UPOirrOX0gV9qW_gtV-RDKDj71C_HxLrvApv5d6qheCiFXfFrxwgOAty5J3GFtc7eOrYo4gySThZno/s1600/Arrow+Quilt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAoFU36c3C87dubEQsEJ4L4fDVCZgk6NcVqwXy-FdPDPnrEvs5kWMCXFTZ5T1M8UPOirrOX0gV9qW_gtV-RDKDj71C_HxLrvApv5d6qheCiFXfFrxwgOAty5J3GFtc7eOrYo4gySThZno/s1600/Arrow+Quilt.jpg" height="320" width="269" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I was contacted by a staff member at Quilty she had asked me if I would be willing to make the quilt using Michael Miller Cotton Couture Solids. Of course I said yes! If you have never had the opportunity to feel these solid fabrics, I suggest going to your LQS or jumping online to buy a few yards right this minute. These fabrics are glorious!! The solids feel almost silky and have a shine to them that I have not seen on other solids. Trust me, this is something you want to snuggle with!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3ZhNCI1pWK8u37Uo_U-5m_fue4OxMY7yfvtf8cvusRWCmDHaInssdaPqWdwagZq8RRIGya5LR1Q_7U1GGa3AlQbEN6cXSHNIcAbQvE83fU9HmrpDa6G4-jeo959A67FNqI8Z6r9YzJN4/s1600/IMG_1048.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3ZhNCI1pWK8u37Uo_U-5m_fue4OxMY7yfvtf8cvusRWCmDHaInssdaPqWdwagZq8RRIGya5LR1Q_7U1GGa3AlQbEN6cXSHNIcAbQvE83fU9HmrpDa6G4-jeo959A67FNqI8Z6r9YzJN4/s1600/IMG_1048.JPG" height="320" width="301" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3ZhNCI1pWK8u37Uo_U-5m_fue4OxMY7yfvtf8cvusRWCmDHaInssdaPqWdwagZq8RRIGya5LR1Q_7U1GGa3AlQbEN6cXSHNIcAbQvE83fU9HmrpDa6G4-jeo959A67FNqI8Z6r9YzJN4/s1600/IMG_1048.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, I received all of my fabric, stitched up the quilt, and sent it off to Quilty Magazine. ...and then the waiting began. It takes MONTHS for a magazine to be developed. I have learned so much about the process and about all the work that goes into making a magazine successful. All the waiting was totally worth it when I finally received my copy. I can't believe one of my patterns is in print!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

There are fun quilting-related quotes all over the Handi Quilter headquarters! This would be such a fun place to work!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRZBPXjNJ_kLmcedlpcOdX7-advLeF5-TJSvP5XaapLgMLMVY1niSaH3AhqFK4VE5cAyq4Fy1RkbBGPCWPxKO_eda5USlIF4kDRJB8Kvb0CMd5p5KuJEsb4mhVUcuN9rhI_VF89zDdW3s/s1600/IMG_2710.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRZBPXjNJ_kLmcedlpcOdX7-advLeF5-TJSvP5XaapLgMLMVY1niSaH3AhqFK4VE5cAyq4Fy1RkbBGPCWPxKO_eda5USlIF4kDRJB8Kvb0CMd5p5KuJEsb4mhVUcuN9rhI_VF89zDdW3s/s320/IMG_2710.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I spent yesterday back in the technician classroom. Some of the material covered yesterday was definitely over my head. We talked a lot about the mechanics and the computer system inside the machine - and I have absolutely no background in these topics. I'm not sure I will ever feel comfortable taking someone's machine apart and replacing parts, but I do feel confident that I know enough to run a successful rental program at the shop. I feel confident in trouble shooting issues and in explaining why certain steps must be taken in order to run the machine successfully. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5iJgxVmDVZueJcb2U8NGSqbF6fYSJ1fb__Y4A4tPOGge6vgirB62SfhEqo5X3uaw9IY0v9Qj45eVwnhK8A6SIXbNXNBXas_1LbJlQtdbMtAprQDoE4iHW8o_P0Q9OONOOsNk1cPmu6vg/s1600/IMG_0149.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5iJgxVmDVZueJcb2U8NGSqbF6fYSJ1fb__Y4A4tPOGge6vgirB62SfhEqo5X3uaw9IY0v9Qj45eVwnhK8A6SIXbNXNBXas_1LbJlQtdbMtAprQDoE4iHW8o_P0Q9OONOOsNk1cPmu6vg/s320/IMG_0149.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is the C-Pod that is installed on one side of the machine. This controls the computer system. On the opposite side of the machine is the P-Pod that controls the power supply. That black bracelet on my left wrist is keeping me grounded so my body did not supply a surge of energy to the machine while I was working</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifhm-i3koyHbuGXvi3x333vGE-_2ontpM-0GCF60ZYE__w6MGFOkuPp_e2sUHqYUXbCkkZ3pNhwKSbtwLiqZpGom3efAcsNY6beXVF67uKaKevcQqGRDJTQengAAKM4ynGNK_7UDlQ8fs/s1600/IMG_2713.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifhm-i3koyHbuGXvi3x333vGE-_2ontpM-0GCF60ZYE__w6MGFOkuPp_e2sUHqYUXbCkkZ3pNhwKSbtwLiqZpGom3efAcsNY6beXVF67uKaKevcQqGRDJTQengAAKM4ynGNK_7UDlQ8fs/s320/IMG_2713.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I had to hook the C-Pod to the machine by attaching wires to their corresponding receivers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb9pONfn0ptnxgDFJO253nE8JvBJj6f6TUlGEbkGLsRXHaZkJ6hGefJfFaqcTt7harpv9QtVYIzKZtNyi509-HYgjmRmXHSmVtgIdbB03xuNSWyP8qffbZH8A3laSDd5OsHIo3kdKlg4A/s1600/IMG_2715.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb9pONfn0ptnxgDFJO253nE8JvBJj6f6TUlGEbkGLsRXHaZkJ6hGefJfFaqcTt7harpv9QtVYIzKZtNyi509-HYgjmRmXHSmVtgIdbB03xuNSWyP8qffbZH8A3laSDd5OsHIo3kdKlg4A/s320/IMG_2715.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I learned a LOT about timing!! I have always heard sewers talk about issues with their machine timing, but I had no idea what that meant. I know understand the theory behind timing and I know how to check (and fix!) the timing on a Handi Quilter!! Essentially, timing controls the stitch formation and is essential to the sewing process.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
In the afternoon, we put together the frame that is used with the Handi Quilter Avante. Honestly, I didn't help! Oops!! I was too busy picking the brains of a shop-owner who is already running a successful rental business in her store. I love learning from others!<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Yesterday was my first day of training at Handi Quilter! Handi Quilter is a Utah-based company that makes longarm quilting machines. For those that aren't familiar with these machines, they have at least a 16" harp space between the needle and the section of the machine that houses the mechanics. The orientation of a quilting machine is different than that of a standard sewing machine. The Handi Quilters come in either a sit down model or a stand up model that is mounted on a large frame that hold the fabric layers tight and makes basting unnecessary. The first quilt I ever quilted was done on a Handi Quilter and I have loved these machines ever since! I do not have the space in my current apartment to hold such a machine, but I know that someday I will have one of my very own. ;)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I came to this training as a staff member at Capital Quilts. At the shop we sell Handi Quilter machines and will be starting a rental program so that customers can rent time in the shop to work on their own projects. I am very excited because I will be teaching the introductory certification course for this program! During this three day training I am learning about the machines, how they work, and how to service and maintain the machines. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Onto the photos of the day!...</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is the sign that greets all those who enter the Handi Quilter headquarters. I wholeheartedly agree with this statement :)</div>

This is the area where they test each machine for 30-40 minutes. There are certain designs that are sewn on fabric to make sure the machines are of top quality before they are shipped out to customers. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was my favorite room in the building - the classroom!! There are many machines set up in this room so that all classes are hands on and the students are able to practice the stitches and techniques that are being taught in the front of the room. I got to spend the morning here learning about thread, needles, and tension. </div>

No quilting based business would be complete without QUILTS!! There are quilts hanging on just about every wall in the building (except the factory section). All quilting styles are represented. Here are some of the quilts I found inspiring. Don't worry, I will share even more tomorrow!</div>

Yesterday morning I boarded an early morning plane to Salt Lake City! I have been excited about this trip for a long time and I can't believe it is finally here. I will be spending the first half of the week at <a href="http://www.handiquilter.com/">Handi Quilter</a> training (more on that in the next post) and will attend <a href="http://www.sewingsummit.com/">Sewing Summit</a> during the second half of the week!! This trip really is a dream come true :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt6sgDfl96t98ZHQt-dHRxlOZd14_W3Am73udfBvv8nKjwxzvwN6kjsFF2z_hRoGeKKqa5Y6Dh9P9m9tUiloOovsVTwie2IHsthkaECB8wpZ9M4s2v4dgmO8iG_D5lt69zeBEQAeMEv2M/s1600/IMG_2679.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt6sgDfl96t98ZHQt-dHRxlOZd14_W3Am73udfBvv8nKjwxzvwN6kjsFF2z_hRoGeKKqa5Y6Dh9P9m9tUiloOovsVTwie2IHsthkaECB8wpZ9M4s2v4dgmO8iG_D5lt69zeBEQAeMEv2M/s320/IMG_2679.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
We arrived in Salt Lake City early yesterday and decided to check out the city. And when you are talking about Salt Lake City this means visiting Temple Square! It is absolutely breathtaking!! There are many gardens covered in beautiful flowers, fountains, and running water.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidQhL3Zk_ETgj7ZNNNX_3hZ6foJ_Ip-SlBmT0YnzEYCcQ_tE4nHIJ3p5KIPhvX05PknsuG6FvbaF2XLPf9Xc9rLrS0xJj1MAuiBRGWlukwzRK6E0Cs3xGR1nhGb5q3f438BvuQKoL-wrI/s1600/IMG_2684.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidQhL3Zk_ETgj7ZNNNX_3hZ6foJ_Ip-SlBmT0YnzEYCcQ_tE4nHIJ3p5KIPhvX05PknsuG6FvbaF2XLPf9Xc9rLrS0xJj1MAuiBRGWlukwzRK6E0Cs3xGR1nhGb5q3f438BvuQKoL-wrI/s320/IMG_2684.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
And the temple isn't half bad either (joking-it's amazing!) Non-mormons are allowed to walk around the temple grounds, enter the visitor's center, and take guided tours of other buildings. However, there is a gate around the temple and the gardens that immediate surround the building.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRIlBbuKOQBnkLV4OLQVHOoBvhl5E3bmD0UWnlDly4NYKl4wgqLmqeKSwLN1F-RdvvoELqVoP9Ssaw8zN_LH7h77sOGFH77BYq2lUiWvm7foBO0FkK8bh2wRmVaEH1Xq87jBdPAIsZ2ZY/s1600/IMG_2685.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRIlBbuKOQBnkLV4OLQVHOoBvhl5E3bmD0UWnlDly4NYKl4wgqLmqeKSwLN1F-RdvvoELqVoP9Ssaw8zN_LH7h77sOGFH77BYq2lUiWvm7foBO0FkK8bh2wRmVaEH1Xq87jBdPAIsZ2ZY/s320/IMG_2685.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
we took a guided tour of the Church Conference Center. The building was amazing and has a large garden area on the roof. This photo of the temple was taken from the top of the conference center.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY7tsj3r9EEFK35W53MDPMC99ZUt01129ALXTFklAVrepLn9mv1a9Vnh-IzKY1BLa8HrfLsKaXR8-quw5oX0XWKZVUZ80HQMOsdKMixc6QISFLjUfVkIXLRU5fY3gVnoyQ-rcolWNlhGA/s1600/IMG_2687.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY7tsj3r9EEFK35W53MDPMC99ZUt01129ALXTFklAVrepLn9mv1a9Vnh-IzKY1BLa8HrfLsKaXR8-quw5oX0XWKZVUZ80HQMOsdKMixc6QISFLjUfVkIXLRU5fY3gVnoyQ-rcolWNlhGA/s320/IMG_2687.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And a view of the mountains from atop the building. The mountains are gorgeous!!! It is my mission to get a good photo of the mountains before I leave.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3SOGcn5OBRn84THxVbTDhOKrogmeMeLcwu3ldUgc9VN-FxqpcpylcKF76ZVRGWsU28cKKkUkKBPquce8z723V3DOStyjQR-mxlOE8L2H7nsLeoW8v1slDPwUflqplH51qcuN1dhatPL4/s1600/IMG_2688.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3SOGcn5OBRn84THxVbTDhOKrogmeMeLcwu3ldUgc9VN-FxqpcpylcKF76ZVRGWsU28cKKkUkKBPquce8z723V3DOStyjQR-mxlOE8L2H7nsLeoW8v1slDPwUflqplH51qcuN1dhatPL4/s320/IMG_2688.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Inside the conference center is a large auditorium that seams 22,000 people! It is a one-of-a-kind theatre that offers each attendee and unobstructed view of the stage. The church holds national conference in this space, hosts concerts and spoken word, and puts on lavish performances around the holidays. The tour guide was fantastic and was able to give so much insight into the faith, the Book of Mormon, and the building. I definitely suggest going on a tour if you are ever in SLC! This photo is of the giant organ at the front of the hall. It is massive!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYLJyAjd87j4u3J2dBJc05RIt5OzxIKU0GpIi7PTWe-iN18YsTXP7YsMVJ3dfKY8rRdvrr6Bx5OQ8aI85PLzSxALmnTqr1R3s4yqsxF3vlbCpua3PBNqshMb6erZozBDdjyzH9cMMTT2c/s1600/IMG_2689.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYLJyAjd87j4u3J2dBJc05RIt5OzxIKU0GpIi7PTWe-iN18YsTXP7YsMVJ3dfKY8rRdvrr6Bx5OQ8aI85PLzSxALmnTqr1R3s4yqsxF3vlbCpua3PBNqshMb6erZozBDdjyzH9cMMTT2c/s320/IMG_2689.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Another view of the temple from the visitor's center.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx65X5sRRvS3rjo9uIDLtAkKecram8WbYI1yOGA_whppLLsH-uJWvWphNJtk63MqCIi_PBnp7ycsyg9DJw8YwZvokdSi3yGwpun8FBIOP7OPdv30TDm90rgMjKUhg7boZYXUImWoA-09s/s1600/IMG_2692.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx65X5sRRvS3rjo9uIDLtAkKecram8WbYI1yOGA_whppLLsH-uJWvWphNJtk63MqCIi_PBnp7ycsyg9DJw8YwZvokdSi3yGwpun8FBIOP7OPdv30TDm90rgMjKUhg7boZYXUImWoA-09s/s320/IMG_2692.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I have no idea what this building is, but I really like it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPCBL9LDb5-eyEMfYiaQQY_PUhrnECggdKlrpZZR34bKupEAgUrWTwazsCMk4__fYoQs3LzIJPguj6KWW5F2MeW-Z7T9LtWMLoH1XLa5k1lwgF3repJFTR1kp0sEdV0m7ArsGRa-hXRsU/s1600/IMG_2695.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPCBL9LDb5-eyEMfYiaQQY_PUhrnECggdKlrpZZR34bKupEAgUrWTwazsCMk4__fYoQs3LzIJPguj6KWW5F2MeW-Z7T9LtWMLoH1XLa5k1lwgF3repJFTR1kp0sEdV0m7ArsGRa-hXRsU/s320/IMG_2695.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I asked the tour guide what percentage of the city practices the Mormon faith and she said less than 50%. This was a lot smaller than I had originally suspected. Many shops and restaraunts were closed yesterday in observance of the holy day. I can definitely see that the religion has a strong impact on the values within the city.<br />
<br />
I'll be back tomorrow with another update!<br />

Way back in May I went on vacation and had a great time in Virginia and Delaware! Myself and three friends went on the roadtrip to celebrate two of us finally finishing school!! Check out the ice cream maker loaded in the back of the car - that was my other graduation gift :)</div>

A huge thank you to this guy who made the trip possible!! And, of course, as a thank you I had to make a quilt.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I really wanted to use Washington Redskins colors but it is terribly difficult to find modern fabrics in burgundy and gold - so I ended up adding in University of Maryland colors as well. It is definitely not my favorite quilt I have ever made, but it came together quickly and is large enough to fit a double bed! This quilt was my first experience with extra-wide backing and I am definitely a convert. If you haven't tried this fabric I suggest giving it a whirl! Check out this photo below - don't forget this is a bed size quilt and I only have one piece of fabric for the back!! The photo was taken during the basting stage of the quilting process. Don't worry, I only did this layout to get a photo- I actually added batting between these two layers! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

The past president, Katie of <a href="http://swimbikequilt.com/">Swim, Bike, Quilt</a> organized the charity projects as a part of her annual event 100 Quilts for Kids. Katie was able to receive a few fat quarter bundles from <a href="http://dearstelladesign.com/">Dear Stella Fabrics</a> for us to work on these projects. Thanks Katie and Dear Stella!! I volunteered to be one of the quilt leads for the event and I have created this tutorial for guild members who will be helping with the quilt I am heading up. However, I hope that you will find the tutorial useful as well and give it a try!!<br />

I received a fat quarter bundle of the <a href="http://dearstelladesign.com/2012/09/all-hands-on-deck/">All Hands on Deck</a> fabric. I really love the nautical designs and the colors are perfect for a young boy.<br />

The quilt we will be making was inspired by this block I found in the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Rotary-Cut-Quilt-Blocks-Judy-Hopkins/dp/1564778932">501 Rotary-Cut Quilt Blocks</a>. I really like the use of two classic blocks together.<br />

The quilt we will make is made up of two distinct blocks: hourglass and square-in-a-square. Here is a mock-up of how I envision the finished quilt to look.</div>

I made up kits before our last guild meeting so that members could work on their blocks at home and we could assemble the quilt top at the next meeting. Each kit contains 2 fat quarters from Dear Stella and 1/4 yard of white fabric. Those members that received a kit for Block A will make the hourglass blocks, while those with Block B will make square-in-a-square. Both of these blocks are very simple to construct. The following directions are for one fat quarter, since I gave each participant two fat quarters you will follow these steps twice. </div>
<div>
<br />
In order to cur down on the amount of content in this post I have created a project sheet for each of the different block styles. For directions on making the hourglass block, please <a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B-eWv1z0g7nOLXRjLXJMMHh3MEU/edit?usp=sharing">click here</a>. June was the month of paper piecing for Bee Sew Modern! I'm not sure I would have the patience to do an entire quilt made from paper pieced blocks but I had a lot of fun stitching these up!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For those that are not familiar with the term paper piecing, this is a style of sewing to a foundation paper in order to achieve perfect points and very accurate piecing. I always think I am doing something wrong when paper piecing because it doesn't look like much until all of the pieces are trimmed and joined together. Here is a shot of the first block during piecing...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP7vIk0B8opNfy7eqFedHdP5mftk3YHcxmwdjBwdAJTjllAm-NTqr9dhawTt7gvrmsreWsy_lq48_5pYbDAQmw0-awRQkeY5c1r-qqFzP9WrtaSBrZg1mytqfN5yAhb5vcVuYaY6G4o-A/s1600/IMG_2118.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP7vIk0B8opNfy7eqFedHdP5mftk3YHcxmwdjBwdAJTjllAm-NTqr9dhawTt7gvrmsreWsy_lq48_5pYbDAQmw0-awRQkeY5c1r-qqFzP9WrtaSBrZg1mytqfN5yAhb5vcVuYaY6G4o-A/s320/IMG_2118.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here is the finished product! We were each asked to make a paper pieced star block using any pattern or tutorial. I used <a href="http://www.quiltjane.blogspot.com.au/2013/02/aus-bee-block.html">this tutorial </a>for a block called Refractatorium. The "queen bee" asked for a rainbow of colors with a black background. I think this block hit the nail on the head!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghPdiqyGuo7ws25BcEVqU2VwhyX7jBppnXPfSq-sT7puTJI6aXDDHbzjircEw0PZdaSMKXQbWGttceXGPvIklg2fnzf3FVFMN3Izp9p1rT9Ad0TVBIuextGxwK1Ln7s0mFyEspqVUX_fI/s1600/IMG_2134.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghPdiqyGuo7ws25BcEVqU2VwhyX7jBppnXPfSq-sT7puTJI6aXDDHbzjircEw0PZdaSMKXQbWGttceXGPvIklg2fnzf3FVFMN3Izp9p1rT9Ad0TVBIuextGxwK1Ln7s0mFyEspqVUX_fI/s320/IMG_2134.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
My second block for June was this wheel block. The pattern was designed by a fellow bee member and came with amazing directions that were easy to follow. I would love to make a larger version of this block!<br />

For those who have visited before, I am glad to have you back!! Very recently I joined the Moda Bake Shop team and haven't had a chance to tell you about it until now. My first tutorial will be coming out later this month- but until then, I am kicking off my experience with Moda by participating in the Book Lovers day blog hop. Please check out the other participating blogs through Moda's blog, <a href="http://modafabrics.blogspot.com/">The Cutting Table</a>.<br>

<br>
I mostly learned to quilt through blogs, magazines, and internet resources. However, I ended up taking a beginner quilting class after I had already been at it for a few months. This beginner course was taught using the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/1571208127">Start Quilting</a> with Alex Anderson. This is a staple for beginners and is the foundation book for many introductory courses. The quilts are simple and fun, but were a bit too traditional for my liking - however, this partly was due to the fabric selection I had access to at the shop where I took the class!<br>

I love to read quilting books - but since I have to choose a favorite I pick <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Quilting-Modern-Techniques-Projects-Improvisational/dp/1596683872/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1376025878&sr=1-1&keywords=modern+quilting">Quilting Modern</a> by Jacquie Gering and Katie Pederson. I love this book so much! First, I truly admire both of the authors and look up to them as modern quilters. Second, I think this book is full of innovative quilts and looks that I have not seen in previous books. It is definitely worth the purchase!<br>

And, lastly, the book I currently use the most is <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Rotary-Cut-Quilt-Blocks-Judy-Hopkins/dp/1564778932/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1376026097&sr=1-1&keywords=501+rotary+cut+quilt+blocks">501 Rotary-Cut Quilt Blocks</a> by Judy Hopkins. A few weeks ago I started work on this voile quilt top while I was spending time at Finch Sewing Studio. I know that the top still will not be done anytime soon (I have a tall stack of projects that come first!), but I have been thinking a lot about the backing fabric. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirRsGDPq1cYVTG4E2v5EQzTgJI-5S7d10KBjW420dBswHTknc9QcWTf6f5Pv_uKB9zSlZ-JBWzNpzx17F-chO3V9j3VE-Jf0YGtUfcMW8-Ob6rSm0dQmXTwnmwFxWWdvCGFqssepU9xMA/s1600/IMG_2330.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirRsGDPq1cYVTG4E2v5EQzTgJI-5S7d10KBjW420dBswHTknc9QcWTf6f5Pv_uKB9zSlZ-JBWzNpzx17F-chO3V9j3VE-Jf0YGtUfcMW8-Ob6rSm0dQmXTwnmwFxWWdvCGFqssepU9xMA/s320/IMG_2330.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The top is made from voile which is a thin, almost silky fabric that is just luxurious. I plan to use bamboo batting and hand quilt it using large stitches. I want something as equally wonderful for the back. Any ideas? Voile, rayon challis, flannel, shot cotton, and Michael Miller cotton couture are all in the running. What do you think?</div>

This year I am participating in a quilting bee - Bee Sew Modern. I am having a great time stitching together the blocks chosen by the hive and I really am learning new skills along the way! I am really far behind in posting about the blocks. The bee began in April and I am just now getting around to sharing. Bee Sew Modern is the brain child of Kelie of the blog <a href="http://craftnursequilt.blogspot.com/">Craft Nurse Quilt.</a> Kelie has been a wonderful host and has put in a lot of work to make this bee fun and successful for all of us involved!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first two blocks were both from April - wow, that seems to long ago! This block used the <a href="http://greenleafgoods.wordpress.com/2012/08/31/wonky-pinwheel-blocks-a-tutorial/">Wonky Pinwheel </a>tutorial from Greenleaf Goods. This was my first time using muslin as a background fabric. I really like the look and texture - I definitely want to try it again!</div>

This second block was made using the <a href="http://filminthefridge.com/2012/02/23/converging-corners-block-a-tutorial/">Converging Corners</a> tutorial from Film in the Fridge. I really like this modern take on the traditional log cabin block.<br />

I only made one block May since this was also my month to play queen bee. We were asked to make any dresden using black and white fabrics. The block could be any size. This was my first time making a dresden and I used <a href="http://happyquiltingmelissa.blogspot.com/2012/06/double-dresden-delight-ez-dresden.html">this tutorial</a> for a Double Dresden Delight from Melissa Corry at Happy Quilting.<br />

Wow! Back in May I attended <a href="http://www.pinkcastlefabrics.com/pages/camp-stitchalot">Camp Stitchalot </a>hosted by Brenda at <a href="http://www.pinkcastlefabrics.com/">Pink Castle Fabrics</a>. Unfortunately, I was not able to show you all of my pretty photos because of computer issues - but I am up and running now! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Camp Stitchalot was an amazing weekend where I had the opportunity to sew my own projects, but still take three short classes where I learned new skills and was able to walk away with fun completed projects :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeEd4Q9x5j8sJeP_jzG-Ob2U7DtHnpLBwINYgeBmKT4Njo8fgs3GwvfGnxRA70A-3BoI9Y32E_gM_yTCMmGAkr5Fb6jHJ0xQ7B3oa9O-0wdm9hc-M7cdoNLOQlexyny5UnSJGSOjEBzs8/s1600/IMG_1685.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeEd4Q9x5j8sJeP_jzG-Ob2U7DtHnpLBwINYgeBmKT4Njo8fgs3GwvfGnxRA70A-3BoI9Y32E_gM_yTCMmGAkr5Fb6jHJ0xQ7B3oa9O-0wdm9hc-M7cdoNLOQlexyny5UnSJGSOjEBzs8/s320/IMG_1685.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I packed a LOT for camp - but most of it was fabric. Did you expect anything else from me?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6W_rEvzD00pCnfPx9IloFqNyGzEQy2y_CKn9yvas051FEXpXL2iLwTCug5rpCz3WDo9O6hoRtvBlTH5yRc7vlWOrFuXuN7oawFYeMNTls8Ekg75mOaL0zbUDjjf_EJS5cTdbYRhif_zs/s1600/IMG_1705.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6W_rEvzD00pCnfPx9IloFqNyGzEQy2y_CKn9yvas051FEXpXL2iLwTCug5rpCz3WDo9O6hoRtvBlTH5yRc7vlWOrFuXuN7oawFYeMNTls8Ekg75mOaL0zbUDjjf_EJS5cTdbYRhif_zs/s320/IMG_1705.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We packed the room full of sewing machines, irons, cutting stations, and fabric. Good things were definitely happening in every nook and cranny of this room. </div>

Now that my computer is up and working again I can tell you about the fun trip I took with friends a few weeks ago. My friend Rachel, Katherine, and I decided to make last minute plans for a day trip to New York City! I had never been to NYC - and in all honesty, never had much of a desire to make the trip. We had a wonderful and adventurous day!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The story of this trip started at the Orioles game the three of us attended together. Literally, on the drive home after the game we passed a sign for New York City and decided that we must go.</div>

This was my first bus trip. We took the early morning Bolt Bus from DC. The bus was clean, had free wifi, electric outlets at each seat, and only took four hours to get to the city. Plus, we got a great price!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

One of the first things I saw when stepping off the bus in NYC was this giant button and needle. My kind of heaven!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We had amazing pizza for lunch - piled high with veggies! :)<br />

Overall, it was a wonderful trip and I can't wait to go back again. Next time I am willing to skip all of the tourist hangouts in search of the garment district and gorgeous fabric!<br />

It has been over a month since I uploaded photos to my computer. I have been having some serious technical difficulties because the laptop I got only four years ago is out-of-date and I have been trying to update a few things so I could get it working again. I am so excited to have iphoto running! This means I can start to share blogposts again :)</div>

At the end of the school year we always have a large banquet for fraternities and sororities, Greek Awards. The most coveted awards presented are the President's Cup that is given to the most outstanding organizations on campus. I am so proud to say that the men I live with won!! I always brag about them and tell everyone how much I love them - but it makes me happy to see that others see how amazing they are as well! Congratulations SigEp!!!</div>

**If you also read the <a href="http://www.dcmodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/">DCMQG blog</a>, some of this material will be the same as a recent post I made over there. Sorry for the duplication! :)<br />
<br />
This past weekend was the first ever DC Modern Quilt Guild Retreat. Some members were able to come for a few hours and others were able to come for the entire three days - but I think we can all agree that we had a blast!! It is always so much fun to catch up with friends, stitch together, and talk about quilts.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFFIm17XmdFAHhanjIDmQurOUoSiMPXQFq5W5mdH4CsST1ybNqA9a4l0qNLs1z76JNOydjiB4WoWoHDHmN-kiaWkss7BpDy8B8P7swtL-IXaD4EcMzaFKvGotdrD0LV7qIeS8SplshPeg/s1600/IMG_0052.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFFIm17XmdFAHhanjIDmQurOUoSiMPXQFq5W5mdH4CsST1ybNqA9a4l0qNLs1z76JNOydjiB4WoWoHDHmN-kiaWkss7BpDy8B8P7swtL-IXaD4EcMzaFKvGotdrD0LV7qIeS8SplshPeg/s320/IMG_0052.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: start;">
I was fortunate enough to host the retreat at my house - a fraternity house at the local university. It was so much fun to share my amazing quilting space with others! Definitely not the kind of all-night party one would stereotypically think of in a frat house, but the location worked well. Retreat go-ers took turns preparing meals in the large industrial kitchen. This was a great way to get to know members of the guild and keep costs down. </div>

A group of people worked on Noodlehead's <a href="http://www.noodle-head.com/2013/05/super-tote-pattern.html">Super Tote</a> on Saturday as part of a sew-along. I can't believe I don't have a photo of the finished projects! (Gah! There was just so much going on!) There was a "secret sewer" activity throughout the weekend where retreaters would leave gifts for their secret partner. It was so much fun to see what gifts people were given!! Handmade presents truly are the best! ...well, maybe right after fabric<br />
<br />
Since I hosted the retreat I did not participate in Secret Sewers. Thanks to <a href="http://ifinallyhavetime.com/">Linda</a> I still got to walk away from the retreat with lots of fun and amazing hostess gifts from retreaters. Thanks Linda!<br />

We lucked out and had great weather all weekend! Some people went on walks or runs on local trails and streets. Others enjoyed the beauty by sitting on the porch and flipping through quilting books and magazines. We were even able to eat all of our meals at picnic tables behind the house!</div>

Did you have to miss this retreat? Don't worry! I will start thinking up ideas for an upcoming retreat. Please let me know if you have any ideas and suggestions for locations or activities for upcoming retreats. I think this was such an enjoyable weekend that we must continue to do these getaways in the future! </div>

But don't worry - I will still be a teacher. And what is better than teaching jr. high? Teaching sewing!!! (of course!) This fall I will teach the <a href="http://www.ohfransson.bigcartel.com/product/sewing-circle-tote-pdf-sewing-pattern">Sewing Circle Tote</a> class at <a href="http://www.capitalquilts.com/">Capital Quilts</a> and I am beyond excited about the opportunity! I may even end up teaching a class this summer - if I can come up with a project. :)<br />
<br />
Here is a photo of my first tote using <a href="http://www.ohfransson.com/">Elizabeth Hartman's</a> pattern. Today I purchased some fabric to make a second tote to have on display in the store. Eeeek!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6pXM_2zTGbyvSehXCbKhTf78uUGfq8sv8fkUrmaT77-sp4vg9anngv6byWD0dSyFIiNcdO0O3Oc-VSjJi98poMC2KJPjzXjXdnH90hQkGgKGI8mvruH4-eCabzTLETxj4ek9cXGgazqY/s1600/IMG_1608.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6pXM_2zTGbyvSehXCbKhTf78uUGfq8sv8fkUrmaT77-sp4vg9anngv6byWD0dSyFIiNcdO0O3Oc-VSjJi98poMC2KJPjzXjXdnH90hQkGgKGI8mvruH4-eCabzTLETxj4ek9cXGgazqY/s320/IMG_1608.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And, to make today even better...I will also start working part-time at Capital Quilts!! I am so excited to talk with people about their projects and to cut fabric from the beautiful bolts. I hope that you will come say "hi" once I start work!<br />
<br />
I still don't have a full-time job lined up for the fall, but who can be sad about that when I have a job at a quilt store!?Anna Hallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04548035122377908631noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7244782014673966013.post-90838190669770578042013-05-21T12:31:00.001-04:002013-05-21T12:31:37.906-04:00Half Square Triangles -- TutorialHalf square triangles (HSTs) are a basic staple in quilting. These units are very versatile and can be used in a large variety of blocks and quilts. HSTs essentially resemble a square that has been cut in half diagonally.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeTC0Q728H2oXP-UDUofX1lSLOL-9Wdfe2T9vxXGOZ5f5cNr6K5KUEfbi6N9FC-iosUFbmrcAIlZJLTgQWX8ftm0WwjjM-jo7bBuC6s9bLdtFJAPkGWjyv6LsXjeZusWWrDphSwb-tceA/s1600/HST.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeTC0Q728H2oXP-UDUofX1lSLOL-9Wdfe2T9vxXGOZ5f5cNr6K5KUEfbi6N9FC-iosUFbmrcAIlZJLTgQWX8ftm0WwjjM-jo7bBuC6s9bLdtFJAPkGWjyv6LsXjeZusWWrDphSwb-tceA/s200/HST.png" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
To create two HST units you will begin with two equally sized squares of fabric. You will want to cut these original squares .25" larger than you want your completed HST units. The next step is to draw diagonal lines on one of your two squares (I would choose the lighter fabric). I prefer to use my <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Quilters-Rule-Quick-Quarter-inch/dp/B001J5PQPO">Quick Quarter</a> ruler for this step. You are able to line the center line on the ruler with the diagonal and then draw a line on either side of the ruler. The ruler allows for a one-quarter inch seam allowance on either side of the diagonal - this may make more sense after seeing further steps.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsLyD4IUb4x6u43wMkRVWgMWP10rFAIb9mFvMULdqJH3BrlDphNtzD-jX8DLkSIWyV2m_5rov5t5-1keLtGyIyJi6uYpNvFHjZhsqPhwQsrlZr43YGuQqlBA7W-PB1uaFhPlj9uCi-BlI/s1600/IMG_0331.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsLyD4IUb4x6u43wMkRVWgMWP10rFAIb9mFvMULdqJH3BrlDphNtzD-jX8DLkSIWyV2m_5rov5t5-1keLtGyIyJi6uYpNvFHjZhsqPhwQsrlZr43YGuQqlBA7W-PB1uaFhPlj9uCi-BlI/s320/IMG_0331.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
If you do not have a Quick Quarter ruler, don't worry! You can use any other plastic quilting ruler. First draw a line along the diagonal. Next, draw two lines - each .25" on either side of the center line.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvzxnmuVF-P07KgGmutRo1oU7CszVP6YvSM6Md1YnM0VXklrXdHAgPmFnvPzYg9GH2tuLaIyo6Oi39x4V98cpYvgXFLa_oKWeZ2-5ozn9rR_BiuDcwM8S-sRP-uXw8OvHDQw7fdqpYNJc/s1600/IMG_0422.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvzxnmuVF-P07KgGmutRo1oU7CszVP6YvSM6Md1YnM0VXklrXdHAgPmFnvPzYg9GH2tuLaIyo6Oi39x4V98cpYvgXFLa_oKWeZ2-5ozn9rR_BiuDcwM8S-sRP-uXw8OvHDQw7fdqpYNJc/s320/IMG_0422.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

You will sew along each of the outside lines. Turn your machine speed to slow so you have control over the stitches and can make sure you are moving the fabric through the machine in a straight line. You can choose to pin the two layers together for this step, or forgo the pins if you prefer.<br />

<br />
Press each of the seams to create two squares. I choose to press my seams open.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixVpAxgkva28kOja85_86Ic2AZEX8hqLhHEhT1NAe0Cr4e3mus7TauOWUXVONWw3S0uCWgxUBJ_yh0haVncCc5InisnbBetQqsWHYM5ppuugpGGSAP15vprbPGB8mheVD2FD56-CPwcj8/s1600/IMG_1561.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixVpAxgkva28kOja85_86Ic2AZEX8hqLhHEhT1NAe0Cr4e3mus7TauOWUXVONWw3S0uCWgxUBJ_yh0haVncCc5InisnbBetQqsWHYM5ppuugpGGSAP15vprbPGB8mheVD2FD56-CPwcj8/s320/IMG_1561.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Lastly, you will want to square-up your blocks. To do this, align the diagonal line on the fabric with the diagonal line on your ruler. Trim the sides of the square to the correct square size you need for your pattern. It is really easy to do this if your template is the same size you need - but it can be larger as well.<br />

At our last DC Modern Quilt Guild meeting, members were encouraged to bring "orphan blocks" that they were not using and want to donate to a larger project. I got excited about some of the blocks that were created in bright colors and started playing with the layout for a potential quilt. Aren't these blocks amazing?? Each time I picked up a block I wondered why on earth they had been abandoned. Members of our guild make gorgeous blocks and I am so excited to play with them. This is what I came up with at the meeting. </div>

The block is 15.5" x 15.5" and was inspired by <a href="http://www.canoeridgecreations.com/2013/03/fresh-mini-quilt-club-march-2013.html">this</a> mini quilt from Megan at Canoe Ridge Creations and <a href="http://thehappyzombie.com/blog/?p=466">this</a> block from Monica at Happy Zombie. I named it the Spring Showers Block because I am excited to make a quilt with springtime blues, greens, and greys - it reminds me of spring rains. I have broken the block into three sections for this tutorial. You can make each section out of a different fabric or choose to reuse fabrics. The level of scrappiness is up to you!<br />

This hashtag movement was started by Megan at <a href="http://www.canoeridgecreations.com/">Canoe Ridge Creations</a>. While I have been making a lot of progress on outstanding WIPs this year, I have finished up something even more exciting....my college education! I started school at a community college in fall 2005 and last Thursday I finished after eight years!!! It is such a great feeling to know I don't have any more paper, project, or presentations and that I don't have to read another academic book or journal (unless I want to)!<br />
<br />
So here is my Instagram shot from my last paper-writing session. #finishit2012<br />

Right now I have a suitcase full of fabric and projects and a small-ish tote with my clothing. I feel like this is completely acceptable. :)<br />
